Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Laboratory Technician to join our molten salt fabrication team.\ This hands-on role involves working directly with high-temperature molten salts, operating specialized analytical equipment, building custom salt equipment and supporting industrial-scale production of and research in molten salt thermochemical and thermophysical properties.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a laboratory environment with high-temperature systems and have experience building things, recording data, and handling sensitive chemicals. A strong background in laboratory operations, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety are essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Molten Salt Handling:
- Safely handle, measure, transfer, and observe a variety of molten salts in laboratory and industrial settings.
- Operate equipment in an inert atmosphere glovebox.
- Maintain accurate records of processes, material usage, and purification procedures.
- Work with a team to complete complex tasks and accurately characterize results.
- Laboratory Equipment Operation:
- Set up, operate, and maintain high-temperature equipment.
- Perform sample analysis using ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) to determine elemental composition and impurity levels.
- Conduct thermal characterization using STA (Simultaneous Thermal Analysis), Electrochemical sweeps (Cyclic voltammetry, etc.), and custom-made equipment.
- Oversee the loading and unloading of large (ton scale) containers of frozen or molten salt.
- Operate, maintain, and repair inert atmosphere glove boxes.
- General Lab Support:
- Prepare and label samples, maintain detailed lab notebooks, and ensure accurate data logging.
- Perform routine equipment calibration, system upgrades and modifications, and preventive maintenance.
- Assist with development and implementation of experimental protocols and safety procedures.
Qualifications:
- Required:
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in chemistry, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, chemical engineering, or a related field. High school diploma with substantial lab or manufacturing experience will also be considered.
- Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory environment.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strict adherence to laboratory safety and chemical safety protocols.
- Ability to communicate through oral and written communication, conveying results, challenges, and recommendations for progress.
- Ability to wear full-body personal protective equipment (PPE) properly for 90 minutes at a time.
- Preferred:
- Familiarity with analytical instruments and industrial equipment Experience handling molten salts or high-temperature materials and equipment.
- Prior use of gloveboxes or working under inert gas environments.
- Familiarity with laboratory software/data systems.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to high temperatures, chemical handling, and in-glovebox operations.
- Full-body personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
- Training will be provided for specific procedures and equipment operation.
